Azure Logic Apps enables you to automate workflows by integrating various Azure services and non-Microsoft applications. You can use Logic Apps to collect and forward VMware syslogs from your Azure VMware Solution private cloud to any log management service of your choice. This approach allows for centralized log storage, analysis, and monitoring across your preferred tools.
In this article, learn how to configure an Azure Logic Apps workflow to capture VMware syslogs and send them to your chosen log management service.
Prerequisites
Verify you have an Azure VMware Solution private cloud set up that's streaming the syslogs to an Azure event hub instance within an Azure Event Hubs namespace. A valid instance of event hub within your Azure Event Hubs namespace is required. For setup guidance, visit Configure VMware syslogs - Stream to Microsoft Azure Event Hubs.
Create an Azure Logic Apps instance
- From your Azure portal, select Create a resource > Get Started, then search for Logic App. Find the one called Logic App. From the Create drop down menu, select Logic App.
- Select the Host plan that makes the most sense for your consumption needs. In most cases, the Workflow Service Plan should meet your needs.
In the Create Logic App (Workflow Service Plan) > Basics tab, fill out the Project Details.
- Enter the Subscription you want to use and the Resource Group chosen to house this instance.
- Under Instance Details, enter the Logic App name, Region, and Windows Plan.

If your log management server is hosted in Azure (including within your Azure VMware Solution private cloud), ensure you select the same region as the Azure Virtual Network connected to your log management server. Otherwise, the integration fails. The default Windows plan is Workflow Standard WS1 (210 total ACU, 3.5 Gb memory, 1 vCPU) which should be enough to handle log volumes from large workloads. This option can always be adjusted later as needed.
- After filling in the Project Details, select Review + Create.
- Review the details of the Logic App instance, then select Create. Selecting Create initializes the deployment of the Logic App instance. Once complete, the deployment status reads Your deployment is complete.
Set up the Azure Logic App workflow
- Once deployed, navigate to the Logic App instance. Select Workflows, then select Workflows. Select Add, then select Add from Template. This action takes you to the template catalog available in Azure Logic Apps.
- In the search bar, search for Azure VMware Solution. Select the option called Azure VMware Solution: Export private cloud logs to log management solution.
- On the right hand pane, select Use this template at the bottom of the screen. Give the workflow a name and select Stateful for State type.
- Select Connect to connect the Event Hubs that house the Azure VMware Solution logs to this Logic App instance. Provide a name for Connection Name, Authentication Type remains Access Key. For Connection String, you need to retrieve the Connection String from the event hub instance you intend to use.
- In a separate browser tab, open the event hub instance that contains the log messages. Select Settings, then select Shared access policies. Select RootManagerSharedAccessKey, then select the copy icon next to Primary connection string.
- Navigate back to the browser tab with the Logic App and paste what you copied into the Connection String field. Select Add Connection.
- If added successfully, the Status for the Event Hub should read Connected. Select Next to proceed.
- Add the name of the event hub instance under Event hub name. The exact name of the Event hub can be found under Entities > Event Hubs in your Event Hub tab. Add the URI of the log server you intend to use under Log destination URI, then select Next.
- Review the information provided, then select Create. This action saves the workflow that can be used to send the log messages from Azure VMware Solution to any syslog endpoint.
Integrating with Azure Virtual Network
If your log management server is hosted in Azure, for example, your VMware Cloud Foundation Operations for Logs in your Azure VMware Solution private cloud, you need to integrate your Azure Logic App with an Azure virtual network that's reachable by the log management server. The integration ensures the Logic App can communicate with endpoints that are only accessible within the virtual network.
For example, if you're deploying your log management server on an Azure VMware Solution private cloud, you need an Azure Virtual Network that can be peered to the private cloud's network.
Prerequisites
- The Azure Virtual Network and the Azure Logic App must be in the same region. Cross-region integration is not supported and will cause the setup to fail.
- Ensure there's an available subnet in your Azure Virtual Network for integration. For more information, visit Add, change, or delete a virtual network subnet.
###Steps to integrate with your Azure Virtual Network
Select the highlighted text that says Not configured next to Virtual Network integration.
On the next screen, you'll see a message stating No virtual network integration configured. Select Add virtual network integration to integrate with the Azure Virtual Network that is connected to your log management server.
In the panel, choose the Subscription where your Azure Virtual Network lies, the Virtual Network you intend to use, and the Subnet you want to associate. Select Connect to integrate with your virtual network.
Upon successful integration, the next screen will display the Virtual Network Integration details. You can always select Disconnect if you need to change the virtual network integration for your Logic App.
Adding certificates, updating HTTP headers, and configuring notifications
Certificates
If Azure Logic Apps requires the certificate from the log management server to be trusted, you might need to add the certificate to the Logic Apps instance to enable successful log transmission. Adding the certificate is a necessary step when using tools such as VMware Cloud Foundation Operations for Logs, for example. You can add the certificate to the Azure Logic App instance using the following approach:
Export the certificate from the log management server and save it as a .cer file.
In the Azure Logic App, navigate to Settings > Certificates. Navigate to the tab that says Public key certificates (.cer) and select Add certificate.
- Upload the certificate from Step 1 to CER certificate file and give the certificate a name, then select Add.
- Once saved, copy the Thumbprint value. You need that for the environment variable in Step 5.
- Under Settings, select Environment variables, then select Add. The name of the environment variable to add is WEBSITE_LOAD_ROOT_CERTIFICATES and the value is the thumbprint you copied. Select Apply at the bottom of the panel to save the changes and Apply again at the bottom of the list of environment variables to apply these changes. The new environment variable should take effect.
HTTP Headers
By default, the HTTP-Trigger-to-Log-Destination trigger in the workflow you created has the following key-value pairs under Headers:
- Content-Type : application/json
The key-value pairs can work for log management tools such as VMware Cloud Foundation Operations for Logs. You might need to verify the log management server's ingestion cURL command to see if there are other headers that need to be added. If you see other headers, add them here and select Save so the logs can be ingested properly into your log management server.
Run History
The Run History section of a workflow in Azure Logic Apps provides a detailed log of workflow executions, which helps you track successful runs, diagnose failures, and troubleshoot issues. By reviewing the timestamps, status codes, and error messages, you can ensure your Azure VMware Solution syslog forwarding process is running smoothly and quickly identify any disruptions.
Configuring Notifications
You notice in the last step of the workflow that there's an optional item called Optional-Notification (README). You can replace this item with one of the available actions in Azure Logic Apps (like Outlook emails or Teams messages) to notify you in the event there's a failure that sends your logs to your log management server.
