Hi La Ngọc Thạnh - TA5/CNTT,

I'm sorry to hear that your HDMI capture device shows a black screen or capture error on Windows 11, especially when it works correctly on Windows 10. The Q&A Assist has covered the basic permission and browser checks, I recommend you try out those first before continuing!

Going further, the error MediaCaptureFailedEvent – 0x800706BE often indicates that Windows 11 failed to initialize the video capture stream. This can occur when an HDMI capture device relies on older or non‑compliant drivers are not fully compatible with Windows 11. So, let’s check:

    1 - Confirm Windows 11 driver support

    • Visit the capture device (the camera) manufacturer’s website
    • Verify whether the device explicitly lists Windows 11 support
    • If only Windows 10 is supported, this is hardware limitation.

2 - Check how the device is listed

    • Right-click Start > Device Manager > Expand Cameras
    • Confirm that the capture device appears under there
    • If it does not, Windows is not registering it correctly.

3 - Avoid media line conflicts

    • Windows 11 allows only one Media Foundation consumer at a time
    • Even a background app opened can cause MediaCaptureFailedEvent errors
    • Close all other apps (especially image/streaming: Camera app, Teams, Zoom, etc.)

Since the device works on Windows 10 but fails only on Windows 11, this is likely not an HDMI source issue. Check the device’s official website to confirm if it’s a compatibility limitation specific to Windows 11, or you can share the name and model of it here.

Follow these steps on Windows 11 to troubleshoot the HDMI capture device not showing video in Camera or websites (such as in Microsoft Edge):

    1. Check physical connection and device
      • Ensure the HDMI capture card is firmly connected to the USB port.
      • If possible, test the same capture device on another PC (for example, the Windows 10 PC where it works) to confirm the hardware is OK.
      • Try a different USB port on the Windows 11 device.
    2. Verify camera privacy permissions in Windows 11
Windows 11 may be blocking apps (including browsers) from using the capture device as a camera.
      1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      2. Make sure Camera access is turned on. If it is off and greyed out, an administrator must enable it.
      3. Make sure Let apps access your camera is turned on.
      4. Scroll down and ensure Let desktop apps access your camera is turned on. Browsers like Microsoft Edge and conferencing apps require this setting.
      5. Reopen the website and allow camera access when the browser prompts.
    3. Test the capture device in the Windows Camera app
This helps determine if the issue is with Windows or only with the browser/website.
      1. Open Start > Camera.
      2. In the Camera app, switch between available cameras and check if the HDMI capture device appears and shows a preview.
      3. If the camera works in the Camera app but not on the website, the problem is likely with the website or browser settings.
    4. Use Camera settings to manage the capture device
On Windows 11, confirm that the capture device is recognized as a camera and adjust its defaults:
      1. Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras (or use the shortcut: Open Bluetooth & devices > Cameras).
      2. Under Connected cameras, select the HDMI capture device if it appears.
      3. Confirm that a preview is shown and adjust any available settings (brightness, contrast, etc.) if needed.
    5. Run the Windows camera troubleshooter
If the device is detected but not working correctly:
      • Open the Get Help app and run the Windows Camera troubleshooter using the built-in link: Windows Camera troubleshooter.
      • Follow the automated steps and apply any fixes it suggests.
    6. Update the capture device driver via Windows Update
If the HDMI capture device shows as a camera but gives a black image, the driver might be outdated or incompatible:
    7. Compare with Windows 10 behavior
Since the same device works on Windows 10, focus on:
      • Privacy & security > Camera permissions (step 2).
      • Browser permissions: ensure Edge (or other browser) is allowed to use the camera and that the HDMI capture device is selected in the website’s camera selector.

If after these steps the capture device still shows only a black image on websites but works in the Camera app, the issue is likely specific to the browser or the site’s implementation, and testing another browser or site that supports camera selection can help isolate it.
