Bluetooth headset has no audio or mic when connecting to Microsoft Teams calls

Just this month my Bluetooth headset (airpods) no longer work when I join Microsoft Teams meetings. Before I join the meeting my sound works perfectly fine. As soon as I join I have no audio (not just in Teams but in any app during the call). My mic also does not work during the call.

A bandaid fix I can do is go into my device settings and disable "Hands free telephony" on my airpods. This will at least allow sound to work on my calls but I then have to use my laptop microphone. This isn't viable long term though since I want sound and mic capabilities through my airpods. It's also inconvenient since I have to redo this every time my laptop restarts.

I've fully updated Windows and Teams. My drivers are all up to date. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting my airpods. I've fully unpaired and repaired my airpods. I've checked audio and mic permissions to ensure they're allowed.

    Hi @Alex,

Thank you for providing a detailed description of the audio difficulties you are experiencing.

Based on your report, it appears that while your AirPods function correctly for general system audio, both the output and microphone fail upon joining a Microsoft Teams meeting unless "Hands-free telephony" is disabled and you revert to the integrated laptop microphone.

This behavior typically occurs because Microsoft Teams triggers the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) during active calls to enable microphone functionality. To isolate and resolve this conflict, please follow the troubleshooting procedures outlined below:

1/ Configure Audio Devices within Microsoft Teams

Internal application settings often override system defaults. Please verify the following:

    • Navigate to Settings > Devices within the Microsoft Teams interface.
    • Ensure AirPods are selected in the dropdown menus for both Speaker and Microphone.
    • Select Make a test call to confirm that audio input and output are functioning as intended.
    • User's image
    • Note: You may also wish to set Noise suppression to "Auto" or "Low" and ensure your Bluetooth drivers are updated to the latest version provided by your PC manufacturer.

    2/ Reinstall the Bluetooth Driver

If the issue persists, a clean driver installation may resolve underlying software conflicts:

    • Open Device Manager and expand the Bluetooth section.
    • Right-click the Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) adapter (or your specific hardware equivalent) and select Uninstall device
    • User's image
    • Restart your computer. Windows will automatically detect the hardware and reinstall the appropriate driver upon reboot.

3/ Reaching out to IT department to open a support ticket.

Should these steps fail to restore functionality, I recommend reaching out to IT admin to open a support ticket. This allows specialized engineers to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic review of your environment.

To open a request via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center using administrator credentials.
    2. Navigate to Support > Help & Support and provide a detailed summary of the persistent audio issue.
    3. Attach relevant error logs or system specifications to facilitate an efficient investigation.

For further guidance, please refer to the official documentation: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you require further assistance.
