WebGL2 support

An interactive map requires WebGL2 which is not installed or enabled on my older WIN 10 system.

Nothing in Settings seems to address this, and I find nothing at the Microsoft Store either.

I get the same "WebGL2 support required" result with the Goggle Chrome browser.

Can this be enabled somehow? Thanks.

    Hi Bill Drevenik,

I understand how frustrating it is to be blocked from accessing the map because your PC doesn’t support WebGL2. I know you’d like to enable it and move forward, but this isn’t something that can be manually set up.

WebGL2 support depends entirely on your graphics hardware and driver capabilities, which older Windows 10 systems often lack. The only possibility is if a newer graphics driver adds WebGL2 support (unlikely since Windows 10 has reached end of support):

    1. Visit your GPU manufacturer’s site (Intel, AMD, NVIDIA)
    2. Download and install the latest driver for your GPU.
    3. Restart your PC > visiting the WebGL2 test page.

If the test still reports WebGL2 as missing, that means your graphics hardware doesn’t support it. This is a limitation of the GPU itself and cannot be enabled through software or settings. At this point, you have to either use a newer device that supports WebGL2, or check if the map/site provides a fallback (non-WebGL2) version.

WebGL2 itself is not something that can be installed from Microsoft Store; support depends on three things working together:

    1. A browser that supports WebGL2.
    2. A graphics driver/GPU that supports the required features.
    3. Hardware acceleration enabled in the browser and OS.

    From the provided information:

    • For the best experience with WebGL-based content (like Azure Maps or SharePoint spaces), use current versions of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox that support WebGL2. To verify browser support, use the WebGL 2 test page at https://get.webgl.org/webgl2/.
    • Safari and Microsoft Edge Legacy (18+) only support WebGL1 and may show degraded performance or lack of features compared to WebGL2-capable browsers.
    • Internet Explorer 11 is not supported for WebGL content.

On an older Windows 10 system, if the GPU or its driver does not support the required WebGL2 features, WebGL2 cannot be enabled via a simple install. In that case, options are:

    1. Update the graphics driver from the GPU or PC manufacturer and then retest WebGL2 in a supported browser.
    2. Ensure hardware acceleration is enabled in the browser:
      • In Microsoft Edge, go to edge://settings/system and enable hardware acceleration.
      • In Chrome, go to chrome://settings/system and enable hardware acceleration. You may also need to ensure hardware acceleration is enabled at the OS level.
    3. If the hardware still cannot support WebGL2, use a solution that does not require WebGL2. For example, Azure Maps can target older browsers that lack WebGL support by using services with a third‑party map control such as Leaflet, as shown in the “Render Azure Maps in Leaflet” sample.

If, after updating drivers and enabling hardware acceleration, the WebGL2 test page still fails, the limitation is likely the age/capability of the GPU, and WebGL2 cannot be enabled on that hardware.
