opening a file that is in use by another program

I am trying to open a workbook in Excel and it tells me that the workbook is in use by another program. How do I find out which program if is, or stop the program from using it?

In general, to determine the program, the Handle tool can be used (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/handle):

handle name

where name is the name of the file without path and extension.

Does this happen with just this file, or all Excel files?
Do you have multiple instances of Microsoft Excel running?

Thanks for the reach out.

First Goto Task manager check any excel app running background.
just clear all the excel app
then try to open your excel file. its may help to you.
