How login in without the double authentification

Hello,

I am unable to access my university Microsoft account.

I recently changed my phone (the previous one is broken), and since then I can no longer complete the multi-factor authentication via Microsoft Authenticator. The application is not working, and I do not have any other verification method available.

Would it be possible to reset my multi-factor authentication (MFA) so that I can set up my account again on my new phone?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Hello @Celine Hanna,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Based on your description, the issue occurs because your Microsoft account is protected by Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Since your account is managed by your school, Microsoft cannot directly reset or revoke your multi-factor authentication settings. This action must be performed by your school’s IT administrator.

Please reach out to your IT admin and request that they revoke and require re-registration of your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) settings. They can do this by following these steps:

    • Signing in to the Microsoft Entra Admin Center
    • Navigating to Users > Your Account > Authentication methods
    • Selecting Require re-register MFA

Once this is completed, you will be prompted to set up MFA again during your next login, allowing you to configure Microsoft Authenticator on your new device.User's image

If you are unsure who your IT administrator is, you can refer to this official Microsoft guide for assistance: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Please contact your school’s IT team as soon as possible, as they are the only ones who can perform this reset. Once they have completed the process, try signing in again and let us know if you need further guidance.

    Best regards,

For a university (work or school) Microsoft 365 account, only the organization’s IT/Help desk or an administrator can reset multi-factor authentication when there is no alternative sign-in method available.

Because the old phone is broken and there is no backup method (such as office phone, SMS, or another app), self-service recovery is not possible. The required steps are:

    1. Contact the university IT help desk or Microsoft 365/Entra ID administrator.
    2. Ask them to reset the MFA settings for the account in the Microsoft Entra admin center (they can use options such as “Require re-register multifactor authentication” or clear existing authentication methods).
    3. After they reset MFA, sign in again; the next sign-in will prompt to set up Microsoft Authenticator (or another method) on the new phone.

If sign-in attempts have been blocked due to many failures, wait and try again after some time, or ask the IT administrator to review the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs and MFA configuration.

If there is absolutely no admin other than the locked-out account (rare in a university scenario), the institution’s Microsoft tenant owner must work with Microsoft Support/Data Protection as described in the Q&A examples to regain access.
