Accessing and using Microsoft Teams on smartphones and tablets across platforms
The behavior described indicates issues with how the meeting link is being opened and which Teams client or session is being used, not with Windows or Outlook itself.
For Windows devices:
- Ensure the correct Teams app is used
- Use the work/school (business) version of Microsoft Teams, not the personal version. If both are installed or both accounts are signed in, the wrong client may be trying to open the link and reporting it as “outdated.”
- Clear the Teams cache and restart
- Fully quit Teams (right‑click the Teams icon in the taskbar → Quit).
- Clear the Teams cache as described in the guidance for similar meeting‑join issues:
- For Windows: either reset the app from Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Teams → Advanced options → Reset, or delete the cache folder under
%userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeamsand then restart Teams.
- For Windows: either reset the app from Apps → Installed apps → Microsoft Teams → Advanced options → Reset, or delete the cache folder under
- After clearing the cache, sign back in with the account that received the meeting invite and try the link again.
- Try joining from a browser session
- Copy the meeting link from the email.
- Open a private/incognito browser window.
- Paste the link and, when prompted, sign in with the same work/school account that should attend the meeting.
- This helps bypass any stale desktop client state that might be causing the “outdated” message.
- Check if the meeting is hosted by an external organization
- If the organizer is in another company/tenant, their meeting policies or link configuration may restrict who can join or which client can be used. In that case, the organizer may need to confirm that external participants are allowed and that the link is not restricted to their own organization only.
For iPhone:
- The message “Session Error! Oh Sorry, This session is only Available on Android and Windows Devices” is not standard for normal Teams meetings. It usually indicates that the link is for a specific type of session or web experience that only supports Android and Windows, or that the organizer’s system is redirecting to a platform‑limited experience.
- In that case, join the meeting from a supported device (Windows or Android) using the Teams app or a supported browser, or ask the organizer to confirm that the meeting is a standard Microsoft Teams meeting that supports iOS clients.
If, after clearing cache and using the correct Teams client, the same “outdated” message appears only for meetings from a particular external partner, the organizer’s IT admin may need to review their Teams/meeting configuration for external attendees.
